Please raise fossil fuel divestment in the latest East Sussex Pension Fund members’ survey!

The East Sussex Pension Fund (ESPF) has recently sent a survey to some of its members, the deadline for which is 23 October 2023.

If you’ve received this survey then we strongly urge you to mention the Fund’s failure to divest from fossil fuels in your response and email us at divesteastsussex@gmail.com to let us know that you’ve done this.

One option is to do this under the ‘Any other feedback’ section – see our suggested text below.

SUGGESTED ‘ANY OTHER FEEDBACK’ TEXT:

I am deeply disappointed that the East Sussex Pension Fund has still not made a public commitment to fully divest from the fossil fuel (oil, coal & gas) companies that are driving the climate crisis.

By clinging on to its remaining investments in fossil fuel companies (which now amount to less 1% of the Fund) the Fund is effectively providing a fig-leaf for these companies’ ongoing attempts to block effective climate action and missing a huge opportunity to show real leadership on the climate crisis.

A public commitment to ditch these investments (‘divestment’) would send a powerful signal to policymakers to get serious about tackling the climate emergency, which requires the rapid phasing out of fossil fuels. It would also enhance the Fund’s long-term returns by helping to align it with a 1.5°C world.
